WHERE HISTORY BECOMES HOSPITALITY

Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital — a landscape shaped by ancient temples, forested hills and centuries of quiet cultural exchange. MU HEN KO Q draws from this history, transforming a traditional Japanese residence into a contemporary retreat without diminishing its character.

The architecture remains intentionally restrained. Existing materials have been preserved wherever possible, allowing timber, stone and natural textures to carry the memory of the building forward. New interventions are subtle, prioritising comfort, warmth and flexibility over spectacle.

The result is a place that feels lived in rather than designed — where architecture gently recedes, allowing the rhythms of daily life, conversation and shared experience to take precedence.

The name Q carries multiple layers of meaning.

It echoes the Japanese characters 休 (kyū), meaning rest; 旧 (kyū), meaning old; and 宮 (kyū), a quiet reference to Nara, Japan's ancient imperial capital.

Together, they express the spirit of this house.
